The Ten Commandments

Exodus 20

Deuteronomy 5

I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slaves.

I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slaves.

I. There shall not be to you other gods in my presence (in preference to me; against my will).

I. There shall not be to you other gods in my presence (in preference to me; against my will).

IA. You shall not make for yourself a graven image and any form which is in heaven above, or which is in the earth below, or which is in the waters underneath the earth. You shall not bow down to them, and you shall not serve them, for I Yahweh your God am a jealous God, punishing the iniquity of parents on children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing loyalty to thousands who love me and keep my commandments.

IA. You shall not make for yourself a graven image of any form which is in heaven above, or which is in the earth below, or which is in the waters underneath the earth. You shall not bow down to them, and you shall not serve them, for I Yahweh your God am a jealous God, punishing the iniquity of parents on children and to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing loyalty to thousands who love me and keep my commandments.

II. You shall not lift up the name of Yahweh your God for worthless purposes, for Yahweh will not consider innocent the person who lifts up his name for false purposes.

II. You shall not lift up the name of Yahweh your God for worthless purposes, for Yahweh will not consider innocent the person who lifts up his name for false purposes.

III. Remember the sabbath day in order to maintain its holiness.

Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath for Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work--you, or your son, or your daughter, your male slave, or your female slave, or your cattle, or your sojourner who is within your gates.

For in six days Yahweh made the heavens and the earth, the sea and everything in them, and he rested on the seventh day. Therefore, Yahweh blessed the seventh day, and he set it aside as holy.

III. Guard the sabbath day in order to maintain its holiness,

just as Yahweh your God commanded you.

Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath for Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work--you, or your son, or your daughter, or your male slave, or your female slave, or your ox, or your donkey, or all your cattle, or the sojourner who is within your gates so that your male slave and your female slave may rest as well as you.

And you shall remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt, and Yahweh your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore, Yahweh your God commanded you to observe the sabbath day.
