I said, "I will guard my ways, lest I sin with my tongue.
I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are before me."
I became dumb with silence;
I was quiet even about things that were good.
But my pain was stirred up, the passion of my heart inside me.
A fire burned while I was musing;
I spoke with my tongue.
Teach me about my end, Yahweh;
and what is the significance of my measured days.
I would know that I am transitory.
You have made my days handbreadths;
the duration of my life is like nothing before you.
All humanity is merely vapor. Selah
People walk about as mere phantoms;
they pile up wealth as mere vapor;
they do not know who will gather it up.
Now, for what do I long, o Lord?
My hope is for you.
Deliver me from all my rebellions;
Do not let me be the object of a fool’s reproach.
I have resumed my silence, I will not open my mouth;
For you have acted.
Free me from your blow;
I am undone by your hostile hand.
With reproaches for iniquity you discipline a person;
You make their desires melt away like a moth.
All humanity is merely vapor. Selah
Listen to my prayer, Yahweh;
Give ear to my cry;
Do not ignore my tears.
For I, a resident alien, am with you;
I am a sojourner like all my parents.
Just look away from me and I will look cheerful
before I go away and cease to exist.
