Psalm 40

I waited patiently for Yahweh;

    he bent down to me and listened to my cry.

Yahweh drew me up from the roaring pit, out of the mud of the swamp,

    and put my feet on a rock, making my steps secure.

Yahweh placed in my mouth a new song,

    a song of praise to our God.

Many will see and be filled with awe,

    and put their trust in Yahweh.

How to be emulated are those who place their trust in Yahweh,

    who do not turn to the defiant and those who fall away to false gods.

O Yahweh my God, you have multiplied your miraculous deeds and your thoughts toward us;

    there is no god that can be compared with you.

If I were to recite or tell your miraculous deeds and thoughts,

    they would be too numerous to be counted.

You do not take delight in communion sacrifices and cereal offerings,

    but you have carved out in my head ears that can listen.

Burnt offerings and sin offerings you have not requested.

Then I said, "Look, I have come.

    in the book-scroll it is written about me.

O my God, I take delight in doing your will;

    You instruction is embedded in my inmost being.

I spread the news about [your] righteousness in the great assembly;

    I have not shut down my lips, as you know, Yahweh.

I have not concealed your righteousness within my heart;

    I have spoken about your fidelity and your victory;

    I have not hidden your loyalty and your faithfulness from the great assembly.

O Yahweh, do not hold back your motherly mercy from me;

    let your loyalty and your faithfulness keep watch over me.

For evil things without number have encircled me;

    my iniquities have so overtaken me that I cannot see;

    they are more numerous than the hairs on my head,

    and my heart abandons me.

Here ends the Psalm for Epiphany 2, Series A.

Yahweh, in your good pleasure deliver me;

    O Yahweh, hurry up and help me.

Let all those who seek to snatch away my life be put to shame and confounded;

    let those who delight in my bad fortunes be turned backward and humiliated.

    Let those who say to me "Ha, Ha," be horrified by their shame!

But let all who seek you be glad and rejoice in you;

    let those who love your victory say continually, "Yahweh is great!"

As for me, I am poor and needy, but Yahweh thinks about me.

    You are my helper and deliverer;

    O my God, do not delay.
