Psalm 82

God (Yahweh) has taken his seat in the divine council;

In the midst of the gods he exercises judgment.

How long will you judge perversely,

And show partiality toward the wicked?

Judge the poor and the orphan;

Declare innocent the afflicted and the needy.

Deliver the poor and the impoverished;

Set them free from the power of the wicked.

They do not know;

they do not understand;

they stumble along in darkness;

all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

I said:

You are gods!

Children of the Most High, all of you.

Instead like Adam (a human being) you will die;

You will fall like one of the shining ones.

Rise up, God (Yahweh), judge the earth;

May you take all nations into your possession.

Parallel passages:

When the Most High give the nations their inheritances,

When he separated the various members of the human race,

He established the borders of the peoples,

According to the number of the sons of [El].

But Yahweh's portion is his people;

Jacob is his allotted heritage. Deut 32:8-9. Cf. Sir 17:17 and Genesis 10

How are you fallen from heaven, Day Star, son of Dawn!...You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far north...." But you are brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the Pit. Isa 14:12-15.

Can a mortal be righteous before God? Or a man pure to his creator? Even his servants he does not trust; And he charges his messengers with error. Job 4:17-18

And on that day, Yahweh will punish the host of heaven in the heights and the kings of the earth, on the earth. Isa 24:21

If he called them gods to whom the word of God came, do you say of him whom the Father sent into the world, "You are blaspheming, because I said, `I am the Son of God.'" John 10:35-36
